Para solucionar este error hay que hacer los siguientes pasos:
Pulsamos dentro de Android Studio –> File –> Invalidate Caches
A continuación se abrirá la siguiente ventana. Pulsamos en Invalidate and Restart
Se cerrará el proyecto y se abrirá de nuevo. El error se habrá solucionado.
